Advice On What To Do When Life Hands You Lemons
posted on 09/14/2009
Lemons are very useful and very versatile in the kitchen and in other rooms around your home. One of the ways I brighten the look of my home is by placing lemons in white bowl on the kitchen table or counter top. They are cheaper than flowers and in my opinion smell better.
Lemons are thought to have properties that make them great antioxidants and are believed to aid in fighting cancer in the body.
1. There is more lemon flavor in the zest of the lemon so when a recipe calls for lemon juice, julienne the lemon zest and include it in the recipe.
2. Rubbing lemon on your hands after handling onions or garlic will remove the smell almost immediately.
3. Some foods like apples and potatoes 'rust' after being cut. They turn brown in color and pouring fresh lemon juice over them will prevent the discoloration.
4. On boats, in cars or on planes, the smell of lemons can relieve motion and sea sickness.
5. You can actually use lemon fresh from the tree as deodorant or antiperspirant. Using lemons regularly on your pits will actually stop the musky body odor smell your body generates. I actually found this out when I had pneumonia. I was eating nothing but smoothies and too weak to shower on a regular basis. I thought it was the fruity smoothies keeping the odor at bay. Perhaps it was the lemons I used in my smoothie recipe. Again, lemons are cheaper than deodorant.
6. Lemon juice squirted around the picnic blanket keeps the ants at bay.
7. Salt poured on half a lemon can be used to clean the bottom of copper pots and can clean stainless steel pots easily.
8. Hot water, lemon juice and honey are much better for sore throats than just tea.
9. Adding lemon juice to your rice will prevent sticking.
10. A pot of water, a tablespoon of cinnamon or nutmeg, and lemon rinds over a very low heat, make a very aromatic smell in your home and rids the house of the fried chicken, fried fish smell that gets in your clothes and home.
11. Last but not least (there are tons more to do with lemons), add a little fresh lemon juice to CamoCare Soothing Cream. Find it at health food stores and massage into your sore, tired, achy, and smelly feet and feel restoration return to your whole body. Try it.
When you've run out uses for the lemons listed here, you can always make lemonade.
Martha Stewart's Strawberry Lemonade Recipe
1 pint strawberries
8 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons superfine sugar
8 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
Seltzer water
Before squeezing juice from the lemons, roll them on the countertop, applying gentle pressure with the heel of your palm. This will really get the lemons' juices flowing and make it easier to squeeze them. Purée strawberries and 2 teaspoons sugar in a blender.
Set out two glasses, and spoon 3 tablespoons of the resulting strawberry purée, 4 tablespoons sugar, and 4 tablespoons lemon juice into each glass. Stir the lemonade, and add ice. Top off the glasses with seltzer water. Add more sugar if you like.
