Advice On Social Bookmarking
posted on 08/20/2009
If you're like me you have a Favorites tab or a Bookmarks tab on your browser. I use Firefox so I bookmark. Explorer users Favorite their sites. This is the way we have stored sites that we want to either check out later or be able to go to again and again.
The problem with using your browser to bookmark or favorite a website or webpage is it is dedicated to that one computer. It is not transportable. It also becomes obvious that unless you are very organized your bookmark or favorites folder becomes as messy as your kids room or even worse. The solution is social bookmarking.
There are sites designed to share the information with others, to store information just for yourself or the sites are designed to allow you to store the information so you and the world has access to it. Some sites allow you to store web addresses, websites, music or photos. A minimal listing of social bookmarking sites can be found at wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_software).
If you own a website or blog, social bookmarking sites can drive traffic your way. Sign up for one of the social bookmarking sites and bookmark your site. Let's use Reddit as an example.
Tag your sites with descriptive subject matter. For instance if you ran an advice site, say
we'll call it advice.com. You would set your site as the bookmark. http://www.advice.com and tag it with, advice, dating, health, family, questions, answers, for example. Now someone else on Reddit is looking for advice. Since it is a social network, when they type in 'ask advice' or 'advice on recipes' as a tag, your site will appear and drive that person to advice.com. If you use Digg instead of Reddit, and someone diggs your site, it will increase your pagerank in Google. Even just a few votes will increase your ranking.
If you have loads of media like photos on your hard drive you might want to try Multiply (www.multiply.com). Multiply makes it easy to create, share and discuss your blog, photos, and videos with more of the people you know, and fewer of the people you don't.
A more substantial listing of social bookmarking sites can be found at http://www.searchenginejournal.com/125-social-bookmarking-sites-importance-of-user-generated-tags-votes-and-links/6066/. You can also click on the "Share" button below to see a listing of a few social bookmarking sites.

Good information. I know I wish I had my favorites/bookmarks with me when I am traveling and want to look up my favorite sites. This will definitely help.
